Travelling Safely by Public Transport:
Public transport is usually a cheap and safe method of getting around, but incidents do occur so be vigilant. Many buses and trains now operate closed circuit television to prevent crimes against staff and passengers. Following the subsequent advice can help keep you safe.
• If you are travelling alone late at night, try to sit near the driver of the bus, or in the first train carriage.
• Sit within reach of a passenger alarm as this will enable you to alert staff to an attack or a potentially dangerous situation.
• Don't be embarrassed to change carriage or seat if you feel uncomfortable, and make sure you have a safe way of getting home from the station or bus-stop.
Be aware that pick-pockets operate in stations and on trains and buses so don't travel with your purse, wallet or phone accessible to thieves.
